The most anticipated game of the decade
Rockstar Games officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI with its first trailer in December 2023, and the gaming world hasn't stopped talking about it since. After more than 12 years of waiting since GTA V's original release, fans are finally getting a glimpse of what's next — and it looks bigger, more ambitious, and more polished than anything Rockstar has ever built.
Confirmed release window
Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch in Fall 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has not been officially announced but is widely expected to follow 12-18 months after the console release, matching Rockstar's pattern with GTA V.
Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly stated that GTA 6 will meet its launch window and remains "the most anticipated entertainment property of all time."
Setting: Return to Vice City
The confirmed setting is a modernized Vice City, Rockstar's fictional Miami-inspired metropolis last visited in GTA: Vice City (2002). But this isn't just a nostalgic return — the map is expected to be the largest Rockstar has ever created, potentially including:
- Vice City proper — dense urban core with beaches
- Leonida — a wider fictional state modeled after Florida
- Rural swamps and Everglades-style wetlands
- Small towns and highways connecting regions
Two protagonists for the first time
The most groundbreaking change: GTA 6 features two protagonists, a first for the mainline series (GTA V had three, but they were all male). The confirmed pair:
- Lucia — the first female protagonist in mainline GTA history
- Jason — her partner and accomplice
The trailer suggests a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style dynamic, with the pair pulling off heists across Leonida. This is a significant departure from the solo-protagonist model that defined the franchise for decades.
Technical improvements
Based on the trailer and confirmed details, GTA 6 will feature:
- Photorealistic graphics using an upgraded RAGE engine
- Massive NPC density — reportedly 3x more pedestrians than GTA V
- Advanced physics — improved vehicle handling and destruction
- Dynamic weather — hurricanes, floods, and storms affecting gameplay
- Enhanced social interactions — realistic AI behaviors and reactions
Price and editions
Take-Two has hinted that GTA 6 may launch at a $70 or $80 price point, up from GTA V's original $60. Multiple editions are expected:
- Standard Edition — $70-80
- Deluxe Edition — includes early access items
- Ultimate Edition — bundles GTA Online content
What about GTA Online?
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA Online (the massively successful multiplayer mode from GTA V) will continue running for the foreseeable future, and GTA 6 will launch with its own separate online component that expands on the concepts introduced in GTA V.
Should you pre-order?
With Rockstar's track record of delivering polished, ambitious games, GTA 6 pre-orders are among the safest bets in modern gaming. However, we recommend waiting until closer to launch to compare edition contents and any bundled bonuses.
